Cullum was the reference to music very
early. His Israeli father (his mother - a native of East
Prussia - from the Nazis fled to Palestine) and his mother from
Burma, played in the band "The Impacts". There, Jamie has
already gained some experience on the piano as a toddler, and
later he was singing and guitar lessons. As a teenager, Cullum
played numerous gigs in bars and clubs. Thus, he financed his
studies in 1999 and finally, his first album, Heard It All
Before. The album, released in an edition of 700 pieces, sold
Cullum on his concerts. By Geoff Gascoyne's album became aware
of the young talent and invited Cullum, being involved in the
album Songs of the Summer. After graduating from the University
of Reading in 2001, its financial statements, published Jamie,
who is himself largely self-taught, his best-selling album
Pointless Nostalgic, and in April 2003 he signed a
record-breaking contract with Universal Jazz, a major record
label. Although he really is mostly jazz musician, he knows how
to control an amazing range of styles and is commonly called a
"crossover" artists understood.
In July 2003, he won in the category "Rising
star" at the British Jazz Awards. His third album,
Twentysomething, was published in October 2003 in the UK and
early 2004 in Germany, and found more than 2.5 million buyers.
The album includes a few standards like "Singin 'in the Rain
and What A Difference A Day Made, as well as a cover version of
the classic Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix, but also a variety
of their own pieces, such as the title track or all at sea, the
he co-wrote with his older brother Ben Cullum. In addition, he
composed the music with him to the West End stage play When
Harry Met Sally.
At the Brit Awards in 2004 Jamie was
nominated as "British Breakthrough Act. He played together with
Katie Melua live at the ceremony at Earl's Court Exhibition
Center. Even the birthday of Elizabeth II, he went on.
In September 2005 he released his album
Catching Tales. This album contains up to four exceptions,
their own compositions, which include Jamie has written in
collaboration with Guy Chambers, Stewart Levine and Salaam
Remi.
For the film released in 2008 Gran Torino of
Clint Eastwood Cullum played a melody with the title of the
same title and received a Golden Globe nomination.
In November 2009 was the album "The Pursuit"
released on Decca Records. It consists of twelve songs,
including the single "I'm All Over It," seven more original
songs, a version of "Just One of Those Things" (Cole Porter)
and Rihanna Covers "Do not Stop The Music". This album was not
produced by Stewart Levine, but (except for "Do not Stop The
Music") by Greg Wells, who played on many tracks including
drums, guitar, bass and organ. Geoff Gascoyne and Sebastiaan de
Krom, who had hitherto been associated with Cullum on his
albums, acted in this production is no longer with, but are
recorded as co-composer of "You And Me Are Gone."
Since January 2010 Cullum is married with
Sophie Dahl.
